Grand Junction- Full Throttle Fun

On the western-most edge of Colorado exists a massive region of untouched, open OHV paradise. This terrain makes for exceptionally fast and flowy riding- for people that enjoy the desert, Grand Junction is for you. There’s alot more than meets the eye to this region- we’ve never seen an area like this where the scenery changes so quickly and so drastically.

There’s a huge underlying theme to this area, specifically referring to the Grand Mesa region north of I70 approximately at the middle of town: its fast riding. Your going to want a sport SxS in order to truly enjoy the way this trail network was meant to be enjoyed. In the absence of speed and capable shock-absorbers, your experience may differ substantially from that of our own. The primary caveat here is in the risk of breakage- large whoops and stray rocks can wreck havoc on your equipment, making a great day bad very quickly. Regarding the size of this area, i’m not sure you could explore all of this without living here- the trails go all the way into Utah, both to the north and south. It’s truly massive, to say the least. This trail report consists of a small area to the north of I70 (at the middle of Grand Junction) and a little sampling of Bangs Canyon to the south (an incredible ride that will get its own writeup soon).

As you traverse north from the trailhead (more on this below), you’ll end up at the onset of 21 road- an extreme rock crawling trail. Before it gets too insanely difficult, you’ll be able to follow along either next to or within the creek. The canyon walls encroach on both sides as you wind up through the canyon. The patterns of weathering on these canyon walls are incredible- it’s sort of like a combination between Arizona and Moab, Utah.

Continual Scenery Changes

What we love most about this area is the pace at which the scenery changes- one second your blazing through open expanses of high-elevation prairie land and the next your winding between towering canyon walls. It’s constantly keeping you on your toes and preventing the onset of same-scenery boredom. What we mean by this is that, unlike the desert where its most nearly the same scenery throughout, in Grand Junction your constantly wondering what it looks like around ‘that’ corner. This notion is especially true in the southern region of Bangs Canyon.

Getting There

Take I70 to Grand Junction- if your coming from the east, don’t get on the I70 business loop when you approach town. Turn off onto 27 Rd. to the right, take this road for about a mile and then take another right onto H Rd. Take the first left onto 27 1/4 Rd until you see the staging area a couple of miles down the road on the left. There’s plenty of room at the staging area- you should have no issue finding spots regardless of the time of week.
